A masterpiece worthy of a meme still celebrated 20 years after its release, Shrek is one of the most iconic children’s films of all time. It perfectly balances his fairytale characters and disgusting gags with a sweet story about self-love and never judging a book by its cover. Everyone’s favorite grumpy green ogre Shrek (voiced by Mike Myers) reluctantly sets out on a quest to save Princess Fiona (voiced by Cameron Diaz). Along the way, he meets loyal sidekick Donkey (voiced by Eddie Murphy), fights a dragon, and monologues about onions. Shenanigans reach new heights in Shrek 2, also on Hulu. Just for the “Holding Out for a Hero” footage alone, it’s worth watching. – Belen Edwards, Entertainment Researcher

There can be no debate about the best sports film of the ’90s – no, of the story. Space jam stars Michael Jordan as himself, a retired basketball player and underwhelming baseball player who gets caught up in an All-Star Game for the Ages. The cartoon Monstars, a group of aliens from Moron Mountain, stole the basketball talent of prolific NBA players, and it’s up to Jordan and the Looney Tunes to beat them in a game and fix the things. With signature Looney Tune liners, high-stakes athletic competition with a lot of heart and a surprising amount of Bill Murray, Space jam brand still big. – Proma Khosla, entertainment reporter *

In the vein of Shrek, Ice Age tells the story of a reluctant hero who sets out on a journey to do good. The figure of Shrek here is Manny (voiced by Ray Romano), a woolly mammoth who, along with the chatty sloth Sid (voiced by John Leguizamo), tries to reunite a human baby with his tribe. They are joined by saber-toothed tiger Diego (voiced by Denis Leary), who harbors a darker ulterior motive. While the animation from the early 2000s didn’t age with much grace, the emotional core of the film still stands. It’s a sweet road trip comedy – with no real roads; this is the Ice Age, after all – with tons of humor and heartwarming family. Plus, kids will love Scrat (voiced by Chris Wedge) and his endless struggle to reach for his precious acorn. – TO BE

Few children’s film tropes are as tried and true as an unlikely friendship between humans and animals, and few children’s films nail this trope as hard as Save Willy. A classic coming of age story, Save Willy follows Jesse (Jason James Richter), a struggling orphan who ends up working at an amusement park as punishment for vandalism. There, he befriends the park’s new orca, Willy. When he realizes that the owner of the park is planning to hurt Willy, Jesse tries to help his friend escape. Willy and Jesse’s bond is about as heartwarming as it gets, and Willy’s triumphant leap over the rocks is a pure distillation of family joy. Save Willy maybe over 20, but it’s still one for the ages. – TO BE

A boy named Charlie Brown was the first feature film based on the film by Charles M. Schulz Peanuts comic book, and he manages to effectively capture Peanutscharm and complexity. While the film revolves around Charlie Brown (voiced by Peter Robbins) trying to win a spelling contest and prove he’s not a failure, it feels more like a slice of life movie thanks to the inclusion of several vignettes of the daily life of the children of the lives. Beautifully animated and with an excellent score, A boy named Charlie Brown captures the whims and frustrations of childhood, while delivering an important message about failure and continuing to move forward when the going gets tough. – TO BE

It’s pig! This adaptation of EB White’s classic children’s book follows the friendship between Wilbur (voiced by Henry Gibson), a pig, and Charlotte (voiced by Debbie Reynolds), a spider. When Wilbur is chosen to be shot, Charlotte uses her weaving skills to add messages praising Wilbur to her web.
