The Ramayana is one of the great Hindu epics. It is attributed to the Hindu sage Valmiki and is an important part of Hindu literature (smá¹ti), considered itihÄasa. The Ramayana is one of the two great epics of Hinduism, the other being the Mahabharata. It portrays the duties of relationships, portraying ideal characters like the ideal father, ideal servant, ideal brother, ideal wife, and ideal king. The name Ramayana is a tatpurusha compound of RÄma and ayana (“to go, go forward”), translating to “the journey of Rama”. The Ramayana consists of 24,000 verses in seven books (kÄá¹á¸as) and 500 chants (sargas), and tells the story of Rama (an avatar of the supreme Hindu god Vishnu), whose wife Sita is abducted by Ravana, the king of Lanka (current Sri Lanka). Incidentally, the first letter of all 1000 verses (total 24) makes the Gayatri mantra. Thematically, the Ramayana explores human values ââand the concept of dharma.
