We all need to take care of ourselves right now. Going back to some of our childhood favorites is a great way to inspire that warm feeling of nostalgia that we can wrap around ourselves like an old duvet. From magical little girls to wizards-in-training, college trips to delicious dinosaurs, this list has it all and we hope it sheds some light in your life!

The black cauldron

The black cauldron is often (incorrectly) at the bottom of the Disney movie charts everywhere, mostly due to the fact that many of us haven’t watched it in decades. But now, thanks to Disney+ making most of the company’s vaulted films available, you can once again enjoy this brilliantly spooky, beautifully animated, and totally experimental take on animated fantasy. If you don’t remember the configuration, The black cauldron follows Taran, a young pig farmer, who finds himself embroiled in a deadly battle for the fate of mankind as he and his friends attempt to defeat the maniacal Horned King!

A wacky movie

Another Disney gem that will surely make you feel like a kid again, A wacky movie is an animated classic from the 1990s. Based on the popular Goof Troop television show, this surprisingly sweet film is about the father-son relationship between Goofy and his son Max. After the latter gets into trouble at school, the former decides they should embark on a father-son fishing trip – much to the dismay of his school-aged son. Hijinks ensue, obviously… But what really makes A wacky movie standout is the emotional heart of the film. And Powerline. Obviously Powerline.

An American tail

Disney wasn’t the only animation studio to rack up hours on your childhood television. In the 1980s and 1990s, before the Mouse House’s stranglehold on traditional hand-drawn films really took hold, Don Bluth created often weirder and sadder competing films. One of his most famous films, An American tail centers on a young mouse who emigrates from Russia and ends up in the Grand Apple. If that doesn’t sound familiar, wait until you hear the song “Somewhere Out There.” You will instantly be transported back to your childhood.

An American tail is streaming on now.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

golden harvest

These cheeky teenage turtle brothers are nothing short of a cultural phenomenon… Which is even more hilarious when you realize they were born out of an underground black and white comic strip that blasted the superhero genre and mainstream comic culture! Never mind all that, though. If you grew up in the 80s and 90s, these radical guys were everywhere. And their first cinematic adventure still holds up to this day. With high-tech costumes animated by the Jim Henson studio, incredible actors and full-bodied stunts, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a pleasure to watch anytime, but even more so right now. We could all use lighter heroes in our lives.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is streaming on netflix now.

The NIMH Secret

Another Don Bluth movie that’s likely hit your VHS player or cable viewing, The Secret of NIMH is a touchstone of childhood for many dark, twisty adults. Based on Robert C. O’Brien’s children’s novel, this dark fantasy film also centers on a mouse — but that’s where American tail end of comparisons. The NIMH Secret is a sci-fi-tinged tale about genetically engineered rats and a small family of mice who become entangled in their dark and dangerous world. A quirky must-have inclusion on our list, NIMH is a children’s classic!

The NIMH Secret is streaming free on tube and Youtube now.

The land before time

We told you Don Bluth was busy when you were a kid! Bluth teamed up with Steven Spielberg, Kathleen Kennedy, George Lucas and Frank Marshall to tell The land before time, a family drama about dinosaurs that would traumatize and charm children everywhere. This classic cartoon has spawned a huge franchise, but none quite as touching as this first entry. The tragic 1988 animated classic centers on a young dinosaur named Littlefoot who embarks on a quest to find his family after the death of his mother.

The land before time is streaming on netflix and Hulu now.

Tri Star Pictures

Not only Matilda stars both Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman as Cinema’s Worst Parents, but it was also directed by DeVito! It’s also still a total joy to watch. Based on the Roald Dahl delivered, this magical story follows a little girl with telepathic powers who uses them to wreak (justifiable) havoc on the horrible adults in her life. Honestly, we can always relate. So fire this one up and step back to a time when magic felt wonderfully real.

Disney, the studios of the 20th century

Anastasia is perhaps one of the only animated films to come close to the quality and scope of Disney’s princess offerings. This beautiful tale by Don Bluth takes one of the weirdest historical con tricks of all time and turns it into a dreamlike fairy tale. Based on many, many real-life cases of young women being groomed to pose as the missing Princess Romanov Anastasia, the film imagines what would happen if one of them really was the young royal. With a wicked voice cast, a terrifying villain in Rasputin’s supernatural movie version, and some of the best songs this side of The beauty and the Beast, this one will get you right back.

Anastasia is streaming on Hulu and HBO GO at present.

Mighty Morphin’s Power Rangers: The Movie

9 Nostalgic Kids Movies You Can Stream Right Now_9

Power Rangers by Mighty Morphin really took the world by storm in the 90s as an instant TV staple for young kids. The North American adaptation of Japan’s incredibly popular Super Sentai The series has an everlasting charm, although many of us were horrified when we found out that the Rangers didn’t do any of those rad stunts! You’ll probably recall that their first foray into movies expands on the story of young children with magical powers, massive Zords, and the introduction of a new ranger! If you get a real nostalgia kick from this one, then be sure to check out TokuSHOUTsu, a free Pluto TV streaming channel almost nothing but original Super Sentai watch 24/7.

Mighty Morphin’s Power Rangers: The Movie is streaming on Starz.
